LGS’s Environmental Management System

One of LGS’s goals, as the Shared Services Company of the Leonardo Group, is to help uphold the levels of excellence achieved by the Group, in a context of innovation and continuous improvement of performances.  

As it understands the importance of protecting and preserving the environment and natural ecosystems where it operates, and in line with its Environmental Policy and the Environmental Policy of the Leonardo Group, LGS has implemented its own Environmental Management System (EMS) in order to: 

  1. Prevent and minimise the risks connected to environmental issues 

  1. Improve environmental performances connected to activities 

  1. Pursue the available opportunities for improvement 

LGS’s EMS obtained certification according to standard UNI EN ISO 14001 in 2019. The scope of certification currently applies to 43 owned sites, located in 11 Italian regions, used by the 5 Leonardo departments, where LGS provides services for business and for people.

 

Scope of LGS’s Environmental Management System 

LGS applies its EMS in many areas: in defining, developing and managing solutions and initiatives to streamline costs and improve company performances in the area of goods and services purchases, in real estate and facility management (services for buildings, people and business), in strategic sourcing, in operational procurement, in managing real estate and maintenance, in environmental and energy management, and in the supervision, control and management of property projects.  

LGS: certified focus on the environment 

Obtaining certification of the LGS EMS in accordance with the requirements of standard UNI EN ISO 14001:2015, from an accredited certification body, is probably a one-of-a-kind in Italy, as it serves as a link between the complexity of the work carried out by LGS and the granular nature and extension of the geographical and company scope involved.  

Due to the number of sites and its cross-sector nature, LGS’s Environmental Management System is the most significant one in the Leonardo Group.  

At the sites within the scope of certification, from 2019 (the year when the first ISO 14001 certification was achieved for the LGS EMS) to 2021, 135 environmental audits have been conducted in total (79 regulatory compliance audits and 56 environmental risk audits). In these first 3 years of certification, a reduction was noticed of almost 50% in the total number of comments, which can be attributed to observations for improvement: 119 in total in 2019 and 64 in total in 2021.
