Investment programmes

The investments managed by LGS in the five-year Budget Plan process include a specific section for energy efficiency initiatives. In fact, the management of plants and buildings involves the structured assessment of the benefits linked to adopting efficient technologies, which can lead to a reduction in energy consumption and the relative controllable costs.

Full Potential LED Lighting

Full Potential LED Lighting

The “Full Potential LED Lighting” Programme is part of improving energy efficiency. It was launched in 2022 with the goal of speeding up the transition to efficient lighting technologies, while at the same time improving the conditions of working environments. It is estimated that the initiative will help replace about 140,000 lamps in industrial areas, offices and outside.

Turin District Heating

In terms of the Group’s thermal absorption, we should mention the completion of the “Turin District Heating” Project, which helped eliminate the use of methane gas by creating a modern district heating plant. Alongside reducing CO2 emissions, the project also helped remove the steam power plants installed at the site, improving safety aspects and working conditions.

Energy Self-Production Programme 4.0

The Energy Self-Production Programme 4.0 was launched by LGS with the goal of reducing energy supplies from the external grid, bringing in supplies from efficient, green power plants. The Programme will also help diversify the market risk for energy supplies, guaranteeing a stable cost over time for part of the energy consumed by the sites.

The first phase of the Programme is dedicated to solar power and involves fitting medium-large plants at the sites. The first pilot projects will be launched in 2022, with the goal, at full capacity, of maximising the amount of energy consumed from renewable sources.

Energy Infrastructure Programme

The Energy Infrastructure Programme is focused on implementing structural initiatives and processes to support the energy business continuity of Italian factories. In this area, we should mention the construction of new electrical connections for the factories, the improvement of existing connections, as well as the creation of new back-up lines for use in emergency situations.

The initiatives

Smart Facilities

Smart Facilities

LGS launched the “Smart Facilities” project in 2018, dedicated to the integrated and innovative management of energy and maintenance aspects at Leonardo’s factories, and to the implementation of “zero-cost” energy efficiency initiatives. The project helped identify and launch about 150 non-capex efficiency measures, both for production and general plants. These measures were constantly monitored in order to check that the site’s workers were aware of their compliance and the relative energy saving.

Communication Initiatives

LGS works with the competent Corporate facilities to implement awareness and communication initiatives for Leonardo employees towards the conscious, sustainable use of energy resources: the contribution of everyone at Leonardo is essential to ensure that the challenging efficiency goals which the Group has declared to its stakeholders are achieved.
